Brevard County had a cultural assessment survey conducted as part of the PD&E study. The A. Max Brewer Bridge has been determined to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. It remains one of two existing historic deck girder swing bridges in Florida, and is the longest swing span in the state.
The area is rich with parks and natural ecotourism sites, such as Sand Point Park, Veterans Memorial Pier, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Parrish Park. No adverse impacts to these sites are anticipated as a result of the construction.
Manatee protection provisions will be followed during the demolition of the existing bridge and construction of the replacement bridge in accordance with federal, state and local criteria and regulations.
As part of the construction of the new A. Max Brewer Bridge, a viewing area will be provided on the south side of the bridge to allow for pedestrian viewing of NASA launches.
A display, including photographs of the A. Max Brewer Bridge and the former Walker Bridge, which preceded the A. Max Brewer Bridge, will be placed in Sand Point Park once the bridge is demolished.
The North Brevard Historical Society and local residents have provided input for the display. Additionally, a documentary video has been produced that presents the history of the A. Max Brewer Bridge and the former Walker Bridge.
